Then you get to the part where it inevitably says something like, 'Not typical of the singles in your area' or ' Your results may vary' or 'hahahaha, gotcha!'

I've never been game .. the pics usually look a bit too good to be true! Although I know two couples who met via RSVP happy as pigs in poo they are.
I've met a few gals through Plentyoffish.com which, despite the name, has any human coupling option one might want (i.e. female-female, male-male, and female-male). They also allow screening IN or OUT other options besides dating. Like just activities friends, or um...OTHER kinds of activities...heh. Oh yeah, it's free and the gals I met up with were of average attractiveness I thought.
I think you find a mix on dating sites - some decent, normal, reasonably attractive people, some very odd ducks and some who are pure players.
Just how do they know what the typical singles in my area are?
